My Present

Please allow me to introduce myself.  I’m Richard Young, Director of Yacht Compliance in the Yacht Management division. I have been working with Fairport for almost a decade. During my time here, I have witnessed yachts come and go, as well as crew members behaving poorly or displaying exceptional professionalism. I have also experienced my fair share of accidents and loss, but despite this, I still relish my work and every opportunity to be on the water.

The yachting industry has undergone tremendous growth in recent decades, with a wide range of people, owners, managers, crew, brokers, and agents. It is a truly an amazing industry and I am proud to have carved out a niche applying my knowledge and expertise. Working with people who are passionate about growing the industry and enhancing experiences, and willing to be learning from the industry veterans is a privilege and I am pleased to be part of it.

My Past

I grew up in Kent, England, with a passion for all things nautical. I was tying knots at the age of eight, familiar with every aspect of a nautical chart by nine and purchased my first boat at ten. Sailing quickly became my passion and it has driven my career choices ever since.
I started working in yachting in 1987, following years in the armed forces and commercial shipping industries. I spent two seasons in Greece and Turkey running bareboat sailing charters before jumping on my first large yacht.

As a chief engineer for some of the largest yachts of the time, I had the pleasure of working with happy owners, without the distractions of social networks and the internet.
I settled in Antigua came ashore as a Captain of a small charter yacht running through all the islands, ran a bareboat charter company base and build a horse-riding school! Relocating to the USA became an Accredited Marine Surveyor, a boatbuilder and a certified marine electrical, electronics, corrosion, and standards Master Technician.

With a boatload of knowledge and experiences I returned to my passion - managing large yachts – about 16 years ago and relocated to south Florida. Certifying as a designated person ashore, a company security officer, a management systems lead auditor, certified in cyber security practices, I have been authoring, implementing and maintaining safety and security management systems aboard large yachts for the past decade. Working with some of the industry’s leaders and best superyacht captains and crew is always an honor and pleasure.

My Future

I am excited to work with N&J and MarineMax where I can continue to mentor and provide expertise. Growth with honesty and total transparency is where I see our industry excelling. Seeing happy boat owners having wonderful experiences is my reward for all the hard work and problem solving that takes place in the background.

My Motto

Growing up in Kent England, the county motto is “Invicta” – undefeated - that has always stuck with me. It’s a very cool story of how that came to be back in the year 1066, and well worth a google search!

My Outside-Office Life

Absolutely anything on the water! My passion and my happy place is being on the water and operating a boat!

I have one grown son and a lovely wife with whom I share this boating passion, alongside interests that include hobby farming and tropical planting with responsible land stewardship. I never can seem to put down tools and am always have one project or another building, creating, and improving my house and property.

See you on the water!!
